Our climate is changing, we need to improve the energy efficiency of our buildings –…
The ultimate eco friendly house in a hidden Hampshire street
Hidden away in a quiet road in the picturesque village of Emsworth, is a family home with almost magical properties.
The state-of-art house is built to passivhaus standards, which means that it is so energy efficient that it requires little or no heating or cooling all year round, using up to 75% less energy than a regular UK house. Passivhaus is suitable for homes, offices, schools, universities and community buildings.
Hampshire Passivhaus was the joint creation, design and hard work of husband and wife Julian Sutherland and Ruth Butler. Ruth heads up Emsworth based Ruth Butler Architects, whilst Julian, a Certified Passivhaus Designer, is a chartered engineer at Cundall, specialising in sustainable design. Together they are passionate about sustainable contemporary architecture and nowhere is this more evident than in their own family home.
The house, built on a brownfield site in a dead-end road in Emsworth, was completed in 2015 and the family have never looked back. The comfort, the warmth, the light, the contemporary feel, all add to a wonderful experience as you visit the house.
And as part of the International Passivhaus Open Days 2017, you can come and visit this stunning home and experience it for yourself. The house will be open for guided tours by Ruth and Julian where you can find out about the building process, performance data and how much Passivhaus costs to run. It’s a bit like walking into an episode of Grand Design, as you get to look around to see how their dream home has become reality.
For anyone considering a passivhaus build for their own home, business or community, it’s an essential visit.
Hampshire Passivhaus is open on:
Friday 10th November & Saturday 11th November from 10am to 5pm (tours at 11am and 2pm)
Sunday 12th November from 11am to 4pm (tour at 2pm)

Notes:
Passivhaus is the world‘s leading standard in energy efficient construction. The Passivhaus Standard stands for quality, comfort and energy efficiency. Passivhauses require very little energy to achieve a comfortable temperature year round, making conventional heating and air conditioning systems obsolete. While delivering superior levels of comfort, the Passivhaus Standard also protects the building structure. There are 5 key principles working together:
- Passivhaus windows
- Appropriate ventilation
- Insulation
- Airtightness
- Thermal bridge free design
